EMO cult warning for parents

A few of them appeared to be dead. This is because one of the key looks, especially at the younger end of the fashion spectrum, is Goth.Faces are chalky white, eyes and lips black. You can wear any colour you like so long as it’s black.
To achieve that just-got-out-of-acoffin look, you need corsets, capes, Celtic crosses, an unseeing stare and a prop such as a slightly mutilated china doll dragged along in one hand.
There is a also a term which is new to me and amounts to a much more dangerous teenage cult.
The Emos - short for Emotional - regard themselves as a cool, young sub-set of the Goths.
Although the look is similar, the point of distinction, frightening for schools and parents, is a celebration of self harm.
Emos exchange competitive messages on their teenage websites about the scars on their wrists and how best to display them. Girls’ secondary schools have for some time been concerned about the increase in self harm.
The Emo song, by the American band Adam And Andrew, has cult status on the internet, appearing on many personal websites. It is called Dear Diary and is both witty and alarming.The chorus goes: ‘Stop my breathing and slit my throat, I must be an Emo.
I don’t jump around when I go to shows, I must be an Emo.
Dye in my hair and polish on my toes, I must be an Emo.
I play guitar and write suicide notes, I must be an Emo.’

There are a few important things to point out:
The Emo thing sound much like the satanism thing from the 80’s. Now Ozzy is just a strange old man who seems depserate for attention.
As a cause of suicide and self harm Emo sits very low on the list, it won’t even make the top ten.
Building a neat little solution for a teenager’s anxiety around one thing, whether Emo or divorce, etc, does not help that person.
Furthermore, if any person appears to be Emo, or anything other “thing”, then it is unfair to take your view of that and impose it onto that person. For each person Emo, or music in general, or sport, or whatever, has individual meaning.
Making up these poorly researched notions about what can not even be called a movement, more like a random selection of poorly dressed teens, adds a ligitimacy to those actions that a few, and a really mean by far the minority, will latch on to and use as a means to express there angst. Basically your expectation of the child/teenager becomes reality.
I’ve only found one Emo-related suicide.
My point is, get some perspective.
This is a load of rubish you need to get facts before you comment you need to know what it’s about and why people do it you wonder why emos are alone people it’s because they are judged before anyone gets to know them so why dont tou GET FACTS BEFORE SAYING RUBISH
i agree with Kirsty you have no idea what emos go through so you can be judging you should just leave them to be who they are you don’t see anyone saying be carfull your child might be a chav or gangster with all this rubbish you do need to make sure you know what you are talking about and i mean this!

I’ll start off by saying that I read the other two articles that were posted on this topic before I wrote, and I was rather disappointed by the number one article especially.
I read it, and then thought, ‘Oh, I thought the article was clearing up misconceptions about emo’.
I double-checked, and it was.
It disappoints me, because we are supposed to be correcting the misconceptions.
However, the article says that emo is short for ‘emotional’.
I’m sorry, I really am, but you are wrong.
Emo is not short for emotional.
Emo is short for ‘emotive hardcore’, a music movement out of the early 90’s.
It was led by bands like Rites of Spring.
Emo became a put-down term, coined by people who wanted to make fun of the kids that liked this new band of upbeat hardcore.
It’s unfortunate that it has become what it has, since at one time, ‘emo’ music was good music.
Emo is not tight pants and sidebangs, or self-mutilation.
Emo is not Taking Back Sunday or Hawthorne Heights.
